MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council Alderman Hilary McClintock has urged the public to back the European Week of Waste Reduction by recycling some of the equipment that is lying unused in many homes.

The international campaign runs from November 19th-27th and aims to raise awareness about sustainable resource and waste management.

Council are supporting the campaign by collecting unused hospital equipment, such as crutches and walking aids, as well as old hand tools and sewing machines at its 4RS Reuse Workshop in Pennyburn Industrial Estate.

“This is an important initiative that encourages everyone to make a conscious effort to improve their waste management,” said Alderman McClintock.

“Recycling is particularly important because it reduces the pollution caused by waste and the need for new raw materials to be sourced so there is an onus on all of us to play our part.

“The items that Council are collecting are lying unused in many of our homes and this is the perfect opportunity to put them back into use.”

The hospital equipment collected will be returned to the Western Health and Social Services Trust while the hand tools will be sent to the ‘Tools for Solidarity’ charity which helps groups in Africa.

Further information on the scheme is available from Joe Brolly at the 4RS Pennyburn on 028 71 360453.
