POLICE in Derry have arrested a man after a Poundland articulated lorry careered into Foyleside shopping centre.

The incident happened two months ago when someone climbed onboard the Poundland lorry and released the handbrake.

The driver of the 40ft truck was making a delivery at around 4.45 am on Sunday, September 11 in Ferryquay Street.

When he came out and to his horror, the vehicle became a runaway truck, rolling down Linenhall Street gathering speed into and Newmarket Street before crashing into the wall at the shopping centre in Orchard Street.

Damage was caused to a parked car and a number of street signs.

A number of bollards were also damaged during the incident.

Following the incident, the PSNI in Foyle said they wanted to speak to three young males who were in the Ferryquay Street area.

Now tonight, police say officers have arrested a 21-year-old man earlier today.

He was detained on suspicion of causing criminal damage and motoring offences.

After being interviewed at Strand Road police station, the male was released on bail to allow officers to carry further forensic investigations in relation to the incident.
