LOCAL homes and businesses based in broadband blackspots are being invited to register their details as part of a drive to improve local broadband services, initiated out by the Department of the Economy.
The Department’s Telecoms Branch, with support from local councils, is trying to establish which postcodes are most affected by limited access to high speed connectivity so it can review the roll out of future broadband services.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, encouraged local people to take the opportunity to supply their details, particularly given the wide rural expanses affected in the Derry and Strabane council area.
“This is an excellent opportunity to identify which areas are in most need of broadband access, something which affects the daily lives of so many people in our district.
“Adequate broadband coverage is an essential service for local businesses, and Council with support from DfE is committed to improving services for all.
“This is a critical factor in establishing the right infrastructure to attract companies who operate in a global marketplace, as well as local businesses keen to break into international markets.
“I would encourage anyone experiencing difficulty with broadband services to register their details today.”
Council Business Manager Louise Breslin, said: “In my role working with businesses every day I’m acutely aware that connectivity is a key issue for companies in terms of the level of service expected by the public.
“Superfast broadband is essential in the day to day provision of services and products and I would urge people to take this opportunity to help progress plans to address any deficits in service provision by registering now.”
Details of the addresses and post codes of any areas experiencing minimal or no broadband coverage in the Derry City and Strabane District Council Area can be registered at https://www.economy-ni.gov.uk/consultations/northern-ireland-superfast-rollout-programme-public-clarification-intervention-area
