A stunning trail of sound and light will pass through Strabane town centre tomorrow, Saturday, November 19, and Derry city centre on November 25 and 26 as part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s festive programme.
The ‘Sound of Light’ will illuminate some of the most recognisable areas and landmarks of the new Council district adding a touch of magic to old buildings and streets and bringing some yuletide spirit with music and merriment along each stage of the trail.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock said it was a perfect way to begin the festive season. ‘Following on from the 2015 spectacular event, this will be the highlight of this year’s Christmas celebrations.
‘As the magical procession makes its way through the trail areas, sound and light can be enjoyed by all and the true beauty of each of the locations will be revealed as they are basked in light.
“I would encourage everyone to come along, with trails in a number of locations this will be a magical experience you will not want to miss.’
The Festival of Light Parade will be held in Strabane Town Centre on Saturday 19th November from 4.30pm, bringing a touch of Christmas sparkle to this year’s Christmas Light Switch-On event.
The procession will depart at 4.30pm from Dock Street, traveling along John Wesley Street, Main Street, Bridge Street and Market Street before arriving at Abercorn Square for the Switch On at 5.00pm.
As it is led off by Santa Clause there will be light installations, music and performances from children from Encore Performing Arts Academy to enjoy along the way.
The Sound of Light Trail in Derry will begin with a magical procession which will make its way through the city centre from 7.00pm on Friday 25th November and from 6.00pm on Saturday 26th November.
It will feature colourful Christmas characters brought to life by production company LUXE.
The procession will weave through the streets leaving from Bishop Street car park, making its way through the Cathedral Quarter, then via Pump Street and Ferryquay Street and down through the city centre until it reaches the Guildhall Square, before finally stopping at Victoria Market.
Festivals and Events Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council Jacqueline Whoriskey said she was delighted the trail has expanded to include Strabane Town Centre in this year’s Christmas programme.
“The City Walls provided a stunning backdrop to last year’s event and was the perfect setting for residents and visitors to enjoy our unique heritage and one of the finest examples of a Walled City in Europe.
‘This year the Festival of Light Parade in Strabane will add a completely new attraction to the annual Christmas event for families and visitors.’
