A young man orphaned at just 17 is critically ill in hospital after a horror road crash.
Michael McCloskey, now age20, and a friend were seriously injured in a collision in Magherafelt, Co Derry.
Michael remains in a critical condition in hospital where his family is maintaining a bedside vigil.
His aunt has urged people to pray for Michael’s recovery, and a fundraiser has been launched to help pay accommodation for relatives close to the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Linda Murray also told how Michael was tragically orphaned in his teens.
The 49-year-old said: “He sustained major lung damage, broken neck with spinal cord damage, various other broken bones and burns.
“Michael has been critical all week but he is making small improvements.
“On Monday he was able to move his limbs which was a major relief. Once he is stable he will require surgery for his neck to ensure no further damage to the spinal cord.
“Michael has three sisters who are mother figures to him since the sudden death of their mother Paula just three years ago, age 44.
“Their father, Timmy, also passed away seven years ago age 46.
“The three girls have a long journey ahead while Michael recovers from his injuries.
“Family will be helping financially as best they can to help with their expenses and anything that Michael may require over the coming weeks.
“If anyone would like to contribute it would be much appreciated. Please keep praying for Michael.”
Linda added: “Michael is breathing on his own and talking.
“One of the first things he said was ‘I thought I was dying’.
“More great news is that he has moved his legs. Our prayers are answered. Hopefully he will get stronger.
“I can’t wait to talk to him. Keep praying. We are so grateful.”
