POLICE say a number of people have been injured in a serious collision on the main Derry to Belfast road.
The crash happened on Glenshane Pass close to the Ponderosa bar and restaurant around 9 am this morning.
Emergency services involving police vehicles, the PSNI helicopter and a number of ambulances rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised.
The road is closed is road and police are advising motorists to seek alternative routes.
The PSNI’s Collision Investigation Branch is at the scene trying to establish the cause of the accident.
The Western Trust say that the accident and emergency department at Altnagelvin Hospital is “very busy” as a result of the collision.
They have asked the public not to attend A&E “unless necessary.
A spokesperson said a “major incident” had been declared as a result of the collision.
