SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has praised the crucial role carers play in society.
Speaking on Carer’s Rights Day, Ms Anderson said: “Every day, hundreds of thousands of carers across Ireland play a crucial role in our society by looking after so many people.
“They show great love, care and compassion and a vital life-line in many homes.
“As a carer myself I know at first hand the challenges and rewards of looking after a loved one.
“While many, particularly those who care for family members, do not seek any reward or recognition, we owe it to them to acknowledge the excellent service they provide and to support them in their efforts.
“Carers are currently protected under EU law and many now face an uncertain future because of the British government’s disastrous Brexit agenda.
“We must continue to support our carers by ensuring that their rights, and the democratic rights of the people of the north who voted to remain in the EU are recognised and respected,” she added.
