WITH just four weeks to Christmas, it’s time to clear out those cupboards, and help is at hand from Derry City and Strabane District Council when it comes to disposing of unwanted household items.
The big Christmas clean is almost as traditional as the turkey and stuffing and the message this year for householders is to take the time to dispose of rubbish responsibly.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, encouraged people to check out the range of services available. “I would really urge people to avail of the facilities and services offered by Council as it will make disposing of household junk so much easier.
“As we prepare to receive gifts and new items into our homes we should also remember that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and so we should all make more of an effort to recycle and upcycle goods.
“And services such as the bulky lift collection means larger items can easily be removed, just check out the information on the council website and look out for collections in your area.”
The public can do their bit for the environment by leaving rubbish at any of the council’s recycling centres across the district, just check out the opening times on the website.
Furniture, household appliances such as TVs and fridges, carpets and large toys all qualify for the bulky lift collection which can be arranged by contacting council in advance.
To make services even more convenient there is also a Bin-ovation recycling app available for download.
The app will provide all the latest information on bin collection and recycling services across the council area, and how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste items.
Council Support Services Officer Dessie McChrystal said: “The Bin-ovation app has all the information you need when it comes to recycling with handy tips and a reminder service about bin collections – it even gives you directions to your nearest recycling centre.
It’s free to download and we would encourage all householders to use it.
“And as Christmas approaches I just want to remind people that we are on hand to assist in whatever way we can when it comes to disposing of unwanted items and protecting our environment.”
