THE former Derry nun woman killed in three vehicle road crash on the Glenshane Pass last week was laid to rest in Ardmore Cemetery today.
Loreta Douglas tragically lost her life when the car she was travelling in to a funeral was involved in a three vehicle collision on the main Derry to Belfast road.
the 64-year-old was airlifted to hospital from the scene of the collision but died a while later.
Ms. Douglas’ funeral took place in Thornhill Chapel, the chapel she once served as a nun.
Parish Priest Father Colum Clerkin said Ms Douglas was “much-loved” member of the Sisters of Mercy religious order.
He said she also used her nursing skills to care for a close friend who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Fr Clerkin added that ‘in most people’s minds’, Loreto would be associated with the children’s foundation Lifestart, adding that she also played a key role in founding Surestart Edenballymore.
He continued that Loreto would be remembered at both organisations for ‘her commitment and dedication’ to ensuring that every young child got off to a good start in life ‘no matter what obstacles were placed in their way’.
“Her colleagues in Lifestart and Surestart regarded her as a dedicated childcare worker who had a vocation and someone who made a significant contribution in a personal way to the community, young children, their parents and families,” he said.
“She was an example and an inspiration to her colleagues and with her warmth and compassion, her kindness and commitment.”
There were emotional scenes as Ms. Douglas’ coffin emerged from the chapel after the 10 am Requiem Mass.
Following the funeral Mass, Ms Douglas was laid to rest at Ardmore cemetery
Friends, relatives and those who knew Ms. Douglas described her as a “lovely woman” who was “always gracious”.
