SINN Féin Education spokesperson Councillor Patricia Logue has welcomed news that the international rankings – Trends in International Maths and Science Study (TIMSS) published this week – show the North has the highest-achieving primary school pupils in Europe in major international tests in maths.
The statistics also show that pupils in the North are the sixth best in the world at maths.
The party’s spokesperson on Education said: “I welcome these statistics.
“It is a real success story that numeracy has improved among students in the North.
“As Education Minister Caitríona Ruane initiated the Literacy and Numeracy Signature Projects and it was launched in 2012 by my party colleague, then Education Minister John O’Dowd.
“The Literacy and Numeracy Signature Projects have seen year-on-year improvements in achievement and attainment levels.
“Under Sinn Féin ministers over the past decade we have seen year-on-year improvements in achievement and attainment levels.”
