DERRY City and Strabane District Council have launched their free annual ‘Spice of Life Diversity Calendar’ for 2017 showcasing the spirit and diversity of the entire council area with stunning images taken at events and from places throughout the local area.
Speaking at the official launch at Café Gwyn at the newly refurbished Brooke Park, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock commented that the 2017 calendar was a creative, colourful and joyous promotion of local diversity.
‘This calendar is visually beautiful and carries a strong message of inclusion which is something we as a Council cherish and promote.
“We pride ourselves on welcoming people of all traditions, religions and identities and I’d like everyone to be mindful of this quote in the calendar, ‘We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry’.’
Funded as part of council’s Good Relations Strategy, the calendar contains a variety images taken within the council area which highlights the diversity of people, traditions and places locally. It also highlights the key dates of significant local events.
Community groups will receive a number of calendars and there is a limited amount available to the public from Friday 9th December.
These will be available while stocks last at: The Guildhall, DCSDC Council Offices, Strand Road, DCSDC Council Offices, Strabane Office, Council leisure centres: Melvin, Riversdale, Castlederg, Brooke Park, City Baths, Templemore and Foyle Arena, The Alley Theatre, all local libraries, The Tourist Information Office, the Diamond Centre, Claudy and Dennett Interchange, Donemana
Angela Askin, Community Relations Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council added: “The calendar is without doubt the most popular annual publication produced by the Good Relations Team in council.
“Once the 6,000 copies are gone that’s it so we would advise anyone interested in obtaining one to collect their copy as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
“There is some very meaningful quotes and proverbs such as this Arabic proverb in the calendar ‘Paradise without people is not worth living in’, that remind us that people of all cultures, races, religions, beliefs and sexualities should be part of our inclusive council area.
‘The calendar celebrates people and place and is published for local people to enjoy and celebrate the council area we live in.’
Community groups requiring additional copies should contact Karen Tracey at Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Good Relation team via email at [email protected] or telephone on 028 7125 3253 ext 4296.
The initiative is funded through the Council’s Good Relations Programme (CRU, The Executive Office).
