LOCAL people can have their say on the proposals for the new North West Multimodal Transport Hub on the site of the former Waterside Railway Station when two public consultation events are held this week.
The project aims to be a crucial transport gateway for the region, incorporating rail and cross border bus travel and encouraging a modal shift from car to public transport.
In advance of the formal planning application process, the public can give their feedback on the plans by completing a public consultation survey or by attending public events this today, Thursday, December 15, in St Columb’s Park House between 12.30pm and 7.30pm or on Friday at the Foyle Street Bus Station at the same times.
Welcoming this next stage of the process, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, encouraged the public to use the opportunity to have their opinions heard by key decision makers.
“The North West Multimodel Transport hub has the potential to completely regenerate the area around the current and former Waterside Train Stations, becoming a gateway that will significantly improve connectivity in the North West,” she said.
“It is important that a project of this scale is carefully considered and all the social and economic factors are taken into account.
“The public events planned for this week represent the perfect opportunity for passengers, local residents, community groups and elected representatives to learn more about the project and to offer their opinions and insights into how the process should be taken forward.”
Proposals for the project include the restoration and refurbishment of the Waterside Railway Station building, new platforms, an enhanced Park and Ride, an Active and Sustainable Travel Centre, demolition of the current train station, a new bus turning circle, Greenway link to the City Centre via the Peace Bride and track as well as Signalling and Telecoms works.
Public consultation feedback can be completed online at www.translink.co.uk/northwesthub/ or by completing the feedback section of the Public Information Leaflet available from Foyle Street Bus Station, Derry’s Train Station, Coleraine Bus and Rail Centre, Great Victoria Street Station and Europa Buscentre in Belfast.
The closing date for completing the survey is January 20, 2017.
