The warning is valid from 6 pm on Wednesday, January 11 and remains in place until midday on Thursday, January 12.
Derry and the North West has been taking a battering overnight and this morning from gale force winds.
As a result of the storm force winds, a tree was downed on Mullaghmeash Road, Feeny earlie this morning.
The tree is on the Feeny to Foreglen Road and may cause delays to traffic.
Across the border, high winds across Donegal are causing commuter problems this morning.
The Harry Blaney Bridge is closed for a number of hours while the Arranmore Ferry has also cancelled sailings this morning.
The PSNI are also advising motorists to drive safely over the course of the next 24 hours due to the bad weather.
“Please bear this in mind when planning your journeys, have an alternate route planned,” said a PSNI spokesperson.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Snow showers are expected to develop from this evening, Wednesday, January 11 lasting into Thursday.
“These, combined with strong winds, could lead to locally very poor travel conditions.
“Be aware of the potential for disruption to transport due to lying and blowing snow.
“Cold air originating over Arctic Canada will affect the area from Wednesday evening through Thursday, bringing snow showers and strong winds.
“Wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected in exposed coastal areas and on hills in association with snow showers, leading to temporary blizzard conditions.
“As well as reduced visibility, 2-5 cm of snow could accumulate anywhere within the warning area, with 10-20 cm possible above 300 m.
“Lightning may accompany the heaviest showers, with potential disruption to power supplies as a consequence.”
