THE police have issued advice to motorists in Derry driving in the ice and snow.
A spokesperson said: “So the snow is on in places and trying its best in others so here’s a wee reminder of some helpful advice for driving in snowy and/or freezing conditions
“Firstly always make sure you clear your car, remove as much snow as possible and allow time to defrost it, not only is it safer for you and other road users but it keeps you warm.
“Just remember never to leave your car unlocked and unattended.
“Give yourself extra time for your journey and check your route for road closures etc.
“It’s worth considering an alternative route as well and if your journey is not essential and conditions are poor consider if you really need to make it.
“If you have a baby or small child keep them warm but avoid bulky clothes, coats and snow suits in their car seats.
“It can put them at risk in a crash and cause them to overheat in a warm car.
“Instead wrap a blanket or coat over them which can be removed in the car to avoid overheating (spot the parent).
“Consider having a ‘snow kit’ things like a warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves, wellies or flat shoes.
“A hot flask, bottle of water (useful for drinking or clearing your windows), something to snack on, de-iced, a spade or shovel and a torch.
“A battery pack for your phone and some emergency numbers in case you need assistance. A blanket or sleeping bag has previously been suggested when conditions are particularly bad.
“Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. If you skid, steer into it (the skid not the car in front!) and don’t stamp your foot on the brake. Steer, brake and change gears smoothly, you may find starting in 2nd gear helpful.
“Be tolerant of other road users, givers others and yourself plenty of room to manoeuvre, brake and stop.
“It may take longer to get to work, school or the shop but better arrive safely but late than the late Joe Bloggs.
“Most of all stay safe (and warm).”
