POLICE use of Taser stun guns during an incident involving a man with a knife in Derry was justified, the Police Ombudsman has found.
The incident involving the Taser being discharged are automatically reviewed by the Ombudsman’s Office.
Dr Michael Maguire found that the action taken had been appropriate and to prevent harm.
During the incident in Derry in March 2015, a Taser had to be used when a man reacted violently when officers went to arrest him in connection with a reported offence.
The man – who had a history of self-harm, violence and access to firearms – held a knife to his own throat and struck furniture with an iron bar during the incident.
The Taser was used after the man intimated that he had a concealed firearm, kicked out at an officer’s shield, and reached to the rear of his waistband as if reaching for a weapon.
