DETECTIVES are investigating a motive behind those who left a viable pipe bomb-type device at the centre of a security alert in Derry yesterday.
Part of Earhart Park in the Shantallow area had to be cordoned off on Saturday morning, following the discovery of a suspicious object.
A number of nearby homes had to be evacuated and police and British Army Technical Officer attended the scene.
An ATO robot carried out a controlled explosion on the device.
The PSNI said the device has been made safe and taken away for further examination.
The area has also now been reopened.
Detectives from the Reactive and Organised Crime Branch at Strand Road police station have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on the 101 non-emergency number.
