THE Dublin-Derry Bus Éireann route will be axed in a cost-saving drive, it has been confirmed.
Bus Eireann chiefs said that the move to axe the 833 Dublin – Derry route, along with two others, X7 Dublin – Clonmel, the 021 Athlone- Westport, will save the company €1.1m.
The Dublin-Derry route is currently shared between Bus Éireann and Translink which runs Ulsterbus and NI Railways.
“We now have to implement that decision,” acting chief executive Ray Hernan he told the Irish Independent.
“We have no choice but to do that and make other decisions that are ultimately going to save money and stop the burn of cash that is running at an increasing rate since the end of the year.”
Mr Hernan said losses last month were €1.5 million and at that rate, the organisation would go out of business in May.
The news comes as Bus Éireann workers are getting read to strike after last-ditch talks to avert an all-out strike collapsed after the company threatened cuts to earnings.
The company have proposed €12 million worth of cuts including a 10 per cent cut to allowances and the axing of premium payments.
But angry staff have rejected the proposals and now ready to walk out onto the picket line.
