DERRY MURDER BID: POLITICIANS CONDEMN ATTEMPT TO KILL PSNI OFFICER

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood condemns dissident republicans who tried to kill a police man in Derry

POLITICIANS in Derry have roundly condemned a murder bid on a serving police officer by dissident republicans.

The officer cheated death when the device dropped off his vehicle this morning in the Ardanlee area of Culmore.
Later, when British Army Technical Officers went to examine it, the deadly under car booby trap device exploded.
Homes have been evacuated and police say a security cordon will remain in place until tomorrow morning.
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood condemned those who planted the device the serving police officer’s car.
He said: “The cowards who targeted a police officer this morning have set themselves against the people of Derry and the people of Ireland.
“They are enemies of the Irish people. Their malicious and murderous attempt to bring violence back to our streets has failed before and it will fail again.

“They need to know, they need to be made understand that their fight is with us. It is with the Irish people and there only ever will be one winner in that battle.

“My thoughts are with the police officer and their family at what will undoubtedly be a difficult time. No one in this city or in this society should be threatened for the public service they provide.

“If anyone has any information about this attempt to murder a citizen of our city and destroy the hard won peace we enjoy, I would appeal to them to bring it forward.”

Sinn Fein councillor Elisha McCallion also hit out at the bombers.

The former Derry mayor said: “This bomb attack at the home of a PSNI office in the Culmore area of Derry was wrong and I condemn it.

“Thankfully no-one was injured in this incident but it must have been a frightening experience for people living in the area.

“Those responsible for this attack have noting to offer the people of Derry or the north.

“They do not represent the views of the city and they need to call a halt to these futile actions immediately.”
