A SERVING PSNI officer has had a lucky escape a booby trap bomb fell off his car outside his home Derry this morning.
The alarm was raised this morning at Ardanlee in the Culmore are of the city.
Dissident republicans being blamed for carrying the bid to murder the police officer.
The attempt on his life has now caused disruption to the local community with a number of homes evacuated during the security alert.
The area is sealed off while British Army Technical Officers make safe the under car booby trap device.
The PSNI’s helicopter has been hovering overhead while the security operation continued.
Policing Board Vice Chair Debbie Watters said: ” I am grateful that the evil intent of those responsible for leaving this device did not succeed.
“This officer has had a very lucky escape but such activity reinforces the continuing threat that exists for our police officers both on and off duty.
“As a community it is our responsibility to ensure those behind such activity are brought to justice and I would urge anyone with information to bring it to the police or anonymously through Crimestoppers.”
A PSNI spokesman in Foyle said: “Police in Derry are currently at the scene of a security alert at Ardanlee following the discovery of a suspicious object.
“A number of homes have been evacuated whilst the object is examined.
“There are no further details at present.”
