ASSEMBLY ELECTION ’17: DURKAN – SINN FEIN ‘RODE THE TIDAL WAVE OF ANGER OVER CASH-FOR-ASH

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan signs

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan says he accepts that Sinn Féin have had “a very good election” at the party’s spiritual constituency.

Sinn Fein took over the mantle as the biggest party in the city, something the SDLP had held since the days of John Hume boosting its fortunes in the city.

“We have taken dips before in Derry and then recovered in the following election,” said former SDLP leader Durkan

“But the fact is that even with increasing our vote tally, we didn’t increase our vote share.

“Sinn Féin rode the wave of anger over RHI and Arlene Foster very well and that tide basically overtook us,” he added.
