IT will be an interesting half time time team talk from Damian Barton to his Oak Leaf side as they trail Down by eight points at Celtic Park.
Right from the throw-in (2.30 pm) Down went up Celtic Park and Barry O’Hagan opened the scoring with the first point of the game.
Niall Loughlin had a chance of drawing level minutes later but his free sailed wide of the uprights.
And there was no let up in Down’s scoring.
Within 12 mins they were 0-04 up.
The Mourne Men continued to press home their advantage and on 25 minutes they were leading 1-10 without reply from Derry, with a Ryan Johnston goal piling on the pressure for a Derry score.
That finally came on 26 minutes when Ryan McAtamney scored a point for the Oak Leafers.
And Emmett McGuckin netted a goal – his second in a week – and McAtamney then scored a point. Derry had finally found their shooting boots.
As half time approached, the gap was down to eight points – 1-02 to 1-10.
With one minute of additional time, McGuckin nets a point before Darryl O’Hanlon pointed to bring the game a close for half time.
