PEOPLE Before Profit Derry held its first meeting last night in the city since Eamonn McCann narrowly missed out getting re-elected to the Assembly.
The trade unionist and former journalist polled 4,760 first preference votes – 10.5 per cent of the electorate in the Foyle constituency.
But even with transfers it wasn’t enough to get McCann over the line and he missed out on the final fifth seat to the DUP’s Gary Middlenton.
Earlier on Friday evening, McCann had practically conceded defeat only to find out he was still in with a chance, trailing Middleton just by 1,000 votes.
Speaking after he was eliminated, Mr McCann said he would be reviewing with his campaign team to see where it had gone wrong with the electorate.
Last night, his team met in Derry to hold a post mortem into where his campaign had failed to connect with enough of the electorate.
If the parties fail to reach agreement at Stormont, there could be another election called in just over three weeks time by the British Government to elect a new power sharing executive.
A message on its Facebook page said: “Packed PBP members meeting tonight.
“Organising the fight back against Stormont austerity. Defending every job, fighting every cut.
“Politics of hope not fear, solidarity not hate.
“We haven’t gone away, ye know!”
