SINN Féin MLA Elisha McCallion has welcomed the announcement of a £1.8m funding package for the Year of Youth programme for young people in 2019.
Elisha McCallion said: “I welcome the announcement that Derry City and Strabane District will receive £1.8m towards youth and community led projects.
“During my term as Mayor, I prioritised the campaign to enhance youth provision and inclusion throughout the City and District.
“I wish to commend the excellent work carried out by Oonagh McGillion and the team, ensuring young people are at the heart of the organisational process.
“The unsuccessful bid for the 2019 European Youth Capital opened a window of opportunity to build on the momentum and energy this bid created.
“The events must be broad, inclusive and shaped by the young people.
“I look forward to seeing the finalised programme of events in 2019,” added the former Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council.
