DURKAN URGES SCHOOLS TO SIGN UP TO ‘LESSONS FROM AUSCHWITZ’ PROJECT

WITH only three days left to apply, SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan is urging schools and colleges in Derry and throughout the North to sign up to the groundbreaking ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project.

Mr Durkan said: “In 2008, I benefited hugely from the Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project.

“I was struck by the number of young people from Derry and throughout the North who did not have a full sense or appreciation of what the Holocaust entailed.

“Some people have described their visit to Auschwitz and how they looked at the suitcases and glasses, but it was the pigtails that really stuck with me – perhaps because I had a two-year-old daughter (at the time).

“Those things make us realise what was involved and what was destroyed – and how many lives were lost – including the complete families that were destroyed so that there is no one left to remember them.

“That is why there is a burden on the rest of us to ensure that they are not forgotten to this day – and why we must continue through initiatives like this to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive.

“I would therefore urge schools in Derry and throughout the North to sign up to the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project – and to join the fight against prejudice and intolerance.”
