MINDLESS vandals have attacked play equipment for disabled children at a Co Derry park.
Police and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council are appealing for information following a spate of vandalism at Diversity Park in Portstewart which opened last September.
In the latest incident, thugs tried to set fire to a one-of-a-kind aero glider aimed at wheelchair users, leaving it with scorch damage.
Bottles have also been smashed in the park, leaving dangerous shards of glass on the ground, and plants have been pulled out and destroyed.
Alderman Maura Hickey, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, hit out at the culprits.
“The Diversity Park draws visitors from all over, and we are fortunate to have such a facility in our borough,” she said.
“It is extremely disheartening to hear that it has been the subject of numerous attacks and that equipment which is there for everyone to enjoy is being destroyed.
“I want to urge everyone to act as guardians of the park. If you see someone causing damage or acting suspiciously, please contact police immediately so this behaviour can be stopped.
“This park was created with a vision in mind to bring all children together, regardless of disability.
“Attacks like this are harming some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
“Please think twice about the consequences of your actions and those people you are affecting the most.”
Anyone with information on the attack is urged to contact the police by on the 101 non-emergency number.
