RIVERSDALE Leisure Centre is to receive a further boost with £60,000 of refurbishment work confirmed as part of a wider investment plan of £145,000 planned for the Strabane area.
Since 2013, Riversdale Leisure Centre has benefitted from £150,000 worth of investment as one of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Capital Leisure Projects.
The additional £60,000 investment is now planned to replace lockers and upgrade changing rooms at the facility.
Previous reinvestment initiatives at the centre have seen the complete replacement of all gym equipment, twenty new spinning bikes, a new reception area, front of house booking system, repainting, swimming pool filter replacement and upgrade of the health suite and squash court.
Paul Tamati, Leisure and Sports Services Manager at Derry City and Strabane District Council said, “Plans for a full redevelopment of Riversdale Leisure Centre are now well under way.
“The procurement process for the appointment of a design team for the new centre has begun and Council remains committed to ensuring the facility is fit for purpose with these investments in the interim.
“Council is progressing with a number of capital leisure projects with the objective of ensuring that leisure provisions across the Derry and Strabane District sets a benchmark for other council areas in terms of service delivery and first class facilities. C
“Council is working to improve the current leisure provision across the Strabane area with a number of areas identified as opportunities for improvement with £60,000 committed to Melvin Sports Complex and £20,000 allocated to redevelopment at Mitchel Park.”
The work at Riversdale Leisure Centre is due to commence later in 2017 and customers, user groups and the general public will receive further information when all arrangements for the work have been finalised.
In December 2016 Council launched a European wide process to procure the services of an integrated design team to progress a number of strategic capital developments for the district including Riversdale.
Once appointed, the team will work closely with Council officers to develop what will be landmark facilities for the Derry and Strabane areas.
