#GE17: EASTWOOD ATTACKS BRITISH PRIME MINISTER OVER SNAP JUNE 8 GENERAL ELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has reacted angrily to British Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement this morning to call a snap General Election on Thursday, June 8.

The Foyle MLA tweeted: “It shows you how much .@TheresaMayPM thinks/cares about our peace process that she’d call an election in the middle of talks.”

Talks at Stormont failed to reach agreement before the Easter recess.

British Secretary of State James Brokenshire said he would use the Easter break to come to a decision on the way forward on whether to introduce direct rule from Westminster or call a fresh Assembly Election.

Unionists would prefer British direct rule but Sinn Fein would prefer a fresh election.

There is speculation that he could call the Assembly elections for the same date on June 8.
