HOT on the heels of the success of the 2017 North West Angling Fair, Derry City and Strabane District Council are offering local unemployed people the opportunity to explore the world of fishing at a specially tailored course at the Loughs Agency in Prehen, Derry.
Council’s KickStart 2 Work programme offers a number of water sports qualifications as part of its Maritime Ambassador Programme and are seeking participants for its angling course which is expected to start in early May.
The free course has been successfully running since 2015 and is open to anyone who would like to have fun while exploring fishing in the beautiful surroundings of the Loughs Agency’s ponds.
It represents the perfect opportunity for people to increase their employability skills and gain recognised qualifications while meeting new people.
The course can be completed within five days in a relaxed, fun environment with people who are completely new to fishing or to those with a passion for the sport.
The complimentary lunch is also a great way to chat and learn about fishing our local rivers.
For those with no previous experience of fishing, participants will receive full training to achieve beginner level ‘CAST’ qualifications with the option to progress on to becoming a qualified Assistant Angling Coach.
Project Officer for the Maritime Ambassador Programme at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Geraldine O hEara, said:
“We are blessed with a number of beautiful, popular rivers and loughs in and around our council area, so the opportunity to get to know these while learning new practical angling skills in the beautiful surroundings of the Loughs Agency under the watchful supervision of experienced coaches, is a great opportunity”.
To be eligible for the training you must be over 18, unemployed, reside in the Council area and not enrolled in any other education or training.
