MARK Durkan has been selected this evening to defend his SDLP Foyle seat in next month’s Westminster General Election.
Speaking after his selection (pictured above), the former SDLP leader said: “I am honoured to have been chosen this evening by the activists of the SDLP in the Foyle constituency to be the party’s candidate for the 2017 General Election.
“It is important that the people of Derry have a strong voice in Parliament who will “expose and oppose” regressive Tory plans for a hard Brexit and new cuts to welfare benefits, tax credits for working families and pensions.”
Mr Durkan has a 6,000 vote majority over Sinn Fein.
Sinn Fein has selected the city’s former Mayor and sitting Foyle MLA Elisha McCallion to try and take the seat from the SDLP.
