POLICE are advising the public in Derry to be alert to the latest scam by fraudsters.
The crooks have been preying on both the elderly and the vulnerable claiming they owed money, for example to HM Revenue and Customs, and they only way to avoid jail was to pay the debt in the form of iTune vouchers.
Some of those targeted lost almost £1,000 of their savings.
A PSNI Foyle spokesperson said: “Recently there has been various reports to police of persons receiving telephone calls from various sources stating that they owe money and it can be paid using iTunes vouchers or iTunes gift cards.
“Please note there are no services we are aware of that uses this method of payment only scammers.
“Please see below advice from Apple.
“If you receive a call like this contact police or Action Fraud.”
