THE SDLP has launched its General Election manifesto with a call for a post-Brexit referendum on Irish unity.
Party leader Colum Eastwood said he believes “there is now a route for actually winning a border poll”.
The Foyle MLA said one should take place once the Brexit talks conclude.
Mr Eastwood added: “A unity referendum now has a much broader reach, offering us a return to the EU as a sovereign country.”
The SDLP is standing in all 18 constituencies refusing to give Sinn Fein a free run in some constituencies as they don’t take their seats in Westminster.
It is a staunch opponent of Brexit and argued it is the only party that can effectively fight the UK’s departure from the European Union.
Mr Eastwood made a strong pitch for the SDLP’s policy of attending Westminster, saying: “The only way to take a stand is to take your seats.”
He called on people who voted ‘Remain’ last year to give the SDLP their vote on Thursday, June 8.
The SDLP currently holds three seats, including one in Foyle.
Outgoing MP Mark Durkan holds a 6,000 vote majority over Sinn Fein who watched its vote drop in the Westminter election.
But it has now put up a new candidate in former Mayor of Derry and Strabane Elisha McCallion MLA.
