THE Walled City Music Festival kicks off this week with a stunning line-up of top-class classical musicians from around the world.
The northwest’s premier classical music festival will take place in venues including The Glassworks, Cultúrlann, Millennium Forum and Ulster University Magee from Wednesday 31 May to Sunday 4 June.
The opening night concert will feature leading Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman alongside Co-Artistic Director of the festival Cathal Breslin (piano).
This is followed on Friday by a world premiere of a new piece composed by Professor Frank Lyons (Ulster University) performed by the NonZeroSum Ensemble, made up of the UK-based Benyounes String Quartet and Derry’s Acoustronic Ensemble.
Saturday night’s concert will offer an encore-style evening of some of Derry’s finest musicians including Ruth McGinley (piano), Gerard McChrystal (saxophone) and Kim Vaughan (cello), alongside Co-Artistic Directors of the festival Cathal Breslin and Sabrina Hu (flute).
And the festival closes on Sunday evening with a spectacular gala concert featuring the Ulster Orchestra and guests.
In addition to the impressive concert series, the festival will run an extensive outreach programme of performances, workshops, seminars and interactive sessions around the idea of Inclusive Creativity, levelling the playing field in performance and composition for disabled musicians by developing new technologies and methodologies for their use.
These events are free of charge and open to the public to explore this innovative, ground-breaking programme.
The Walled City Music Festival is supported by National Lottery funding through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Ciaran Scullion, Head of Music at Arts Council, commented:
“The Walled City Music Festival is back with yet another impressive programme of classical music featuring top local talent as well as bringing world-class international acts to the Derry stage.
“From chamber recitals, gala concerts, workshops and more, there’s something for every music fan and I could encourage everyone to go and enjoy.”
