TAOISEACH Enda Kenny will formally resign later after six years as head of the Irish government.
Mr Kenny is the longest serving Fine Gael Taoiseach and the first in his party to serve two consecutive terms.
He will submit his letter of resignation to President Michael D Higgins on Tuesday afternoon.
Fine Gael’s new leader Leo Varadkar will be elected as taoiseach on Wednesday.
Mr Varadkar is not predicted to make significant changes to the cabinet, however, junior ministers Michael Ring and Eoghan Murphy are expected to be promoted.
Mr Kenny was due to attend his final cabinet meeting, before addressing the Dáil (Irish parliament) later.
It is understood other parties will also make contributions before the Dáil is adjourned.
