SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier to ensure the Good Friday Agreement is protected in all its parts.
Martina Anderson said: “The Good Friday Agreement has never been under such serious threat as it is now with the potential axis between the Tories and the DUP.
“As we approach the start of the Brexit negotiations, this is a matter of great concern.
“The Agreement – an internationally binding agreement – states that the British government needs to act with rigorous impartiality, something it clearly hasn’t done to date and is now definitely casting aside with its prospective alliance with the DUP.
“Sinn Féin wants to see the re-establishment of political institutions in the north based on equality and respect and is involved in negotiations to achieve that but it is clear that the British government is not, and never has been an honest broker.
“It is clearly in breach of the Good Friday Agreement and I have now written to the EU’s chief negotiator on Brexit, Michel Barnier, expressing my concerns and calling on the EU to ensure the protection of the Good Friday Agreement.
“I am calling on Michel Barnier to put in place a series of regular engagements with Sinn Féin so we can make sure that the Good Friday Agreement is protected in all its parts in the upcoming Brexit negotiations.”
