Police out in Derry city centre cracking down on nuisance parking by drivers
POLICE were out in Derry today to enforce nuisance parking by drivers who are causing an obstruction to pavements for pedestrians, the blind, the elderly and mothers with prams.
This is despite a warning yesterday by PSNI Foyle on its Facebook site that they planned an operation for today to crack down on those causing an obstruction.
The advice and warning notice read: “”Have you any thoughts on #PavementParking?
“Many of us do it without thinking and without meaning to do any harm.
“We don’t stop to consider the obstacle it poses for blind people, partially sighted people or vulnerable older people.
“Foyleside and Moor Neighbourhood Team have been working with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (@RNIBNorthernIreland), @GuideDogsNI and the @CedarFoundation.
“We have put together an Operation in the City Centre tomorrow (Wednesday) where we will be handing out these leaflets and chatting to motorists.”
Today, police were out and about in the city centre as promised and found drivers did not heed the warning.
An update on its Facebook page reads: “Yeah, you guessed it!
“Foyleside & Moor Neighbourhood Team are out in the City Centre taking in the rays and providing much needed advice to inconsiderate motorists who continue to obstruct our busy city pavements.
“Despite our Facebook warnings yesterday as you can see we have had to issue further advice to motorists highlighting the effects it has on others.”
