A Coroner has appealed for anyone with information about the fatal shooting of a mother-of-six by the British Army in Derry to come forward ahead of an inquest later this year.
Kathleen Thompson was shot by British soldiers in disputed circumstances on November 6, 197.
The 47-year-old was standing in the garden of her home at Rathlin Drive in the Creggan estate when she was shot dead.
She was found by her 12-year-old daughter.
A new inquest into her death is due to open at Derry Courthouse on October 23, 2017.
The soldier – named only as ‘Soldier D’ -who killed her was interviewed in 2013 by the Historical Inquiries Team.
After studying its report, the Attorney General John Larkin QC ordered a fresh inquest.
He said the original investigation was not thorough and the evidence from the soldier will form a key part of the new inquest.
Coroner Patrick McGurgan has now issued an appeal for information ahead of the hearing for anyone who feels they may be able to assist the inquest to contact the Coroners Service.
In a statement, the Coroners Service said: “There may, for example, be persons with relevant information concerning the death but who have not yet brought that information to the attention of the authorities.”
If you have any knowledge which may assist this investigation please contact the Coroners Service for Northern Ireland by email on [email protected] or phone 028 9044 6829 before September 1.
A witness surgery is also being conducted to facilitate this process tomorrow at the Verbal Arts Centre at Bishop Street in the city.
It will run from 10 am-7 pm.
