TRANSLINK’S new hourly rail timetable between Derry and Derry starts from today, Sunday, July 2.
It is hoped that the new increased timetable will boost tourism and bring economic benefits to Derry and the North West region.
The service will also provide greater choice to for passengers, whether regular commuters, leisure travellers or even students commuting between the two cities.
Translink’s Level Crossing Risk Co-ordinator Keith Pollock said that with the new service comes possible dangers for cars and pedestrians.
“I would urge drivers and pedestrians who use level crossings to be extra vigilant, as there will be more trains passing each day.
“It is crucial to only cross the tracks when it is safe to do so and to follow the rules relating to the specific crossing.
“Pedestrians crossing with young children, dogs, or bikes should take extra care before crossing the tracks; cross quickly and never stop on the crossing”.
He added: “We have erected signs at private crossings between Coleraine and Derry to inform people about the additional trains using the line.
“NI Railways monitors the use of crossings across Northern Ireland and anyone, whether drivers, cyclists or pedestrians caught crossing incorrectly could face prosecution.
“In addition, we would remind people that it is extremely dangerous to trespass on the railway.”
From today, the new timetable will provide for 16 daily weekday services each way between Derry and Belfast.
