SINN Féin Foyle MP Elisha McCallion has said that Irish Citizens in the North are looking to Dublin for recognition and representation.
She said she was calling on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to bring forward legislation that would see the proposals of the Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution implemented to provide speaking rights for MPs in relevant debates on the floor of the Dáil as previously proposed and voted for in the Dáil.
Ms McCallion said: “Over the course of the election there was an intense debate on the future, on Brexit and on rights, equality and unity.
“Sinn Féin received an increased vote in every constituency and increased our number of MPs from 4 to 7.
“Nationalists have recognised that the future should be determined in Ireland and not from the benches of Westminster.
“There is an onus for the Oireachtas to become a truly national parliament including the voices from the North. That is why we put so much store on participating in the Good Friday Agreement Implementation Committee.
“Irish Citizens in the North look to Dublin for recognition and representation. They want their voices heard in our National Parliament.
“It is time to implement the proposals of the Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution and provide for speaking rights for all the North’s MPs in relevant debates on the floor of the Dáil as previously proposed and voted for in the Dáil.”
