SINN Fein Foyle MP Elisha McCallion has expressed her heartfelt sorrow and sincerest condolences to the family of the young child who was fatally injured in a road traffic accident in Derry yesterday morning.
One man was arrested following the incident which happened at around 10 30 am in Tyrconnell Street.
The young boy was severely injured at the scene but despite the best efforts of paramedics he tragically died in Altnagelvin Hospital.
Elisha McCallion said: “This is a heart-breaking tragedy for the family of this young child who lost his life in a road traffic accident in Derry this morning. The whole community is in shock.
“I extend my heartfelt sorrow and condolences to the family as a public representative but more personally as the mother of young children myself.
“It is beyond comprehension how this family is feeling today but I have no doubt that the whole community will rally in support of them in every way possible.
“I have spoken to a number of neighbours who also have young children and it is a situation of total devastation for them to digest.
“Obviously counselling services will be made available to liaise with the immediate family but they also need to be available to those neighbours with small children who are also traumatised.
“I also wish to pay tribute to the emergency services who attended the scene of this tragic accident but sadly on this occasion were unable to save this child’s life,” added the Foyle MP.
