SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said Irish passport office rules need to move into the 21st century.
Martina Anderson said: “I have been dealing with a constituent who has been trying to renew an Irish passport but has been facing eight months of delays because of outdated rules.
“This individual’s marriage has broken down and has gone back to her maiden name by deed poll but has been told by the passport office that they won’t recognise that change for two years.
“This is totally unfair and unacceptable.
“Not only is it a refusal to recognise the official deed poll process, but, more importantly, it is unfair towards women who may be fleeing abusive relationships and start a new life.
“I am calling on the Irish government’s Foreign Affairs and Justice departments to intervene and for the passport office’s rules to move into the 21st century.
“I will be seeking an urgent meeting with the passport office to discuss this and to call for immediate change.”
