THE Prison Service have confirmed that a prisoner has died at a Co Derry jail.
The 27 year old prisoner died at Magilligan Prison this morning.
The man died this morning, the Northern Ireland Prison Service said. His next of kin have been informed.
As with standard procedure, the PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have launched investigations into the death.
Ronnie Armour, Head of the Northern Ireland Prison Service said: “I would like to extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the prisoner.
“My thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
The death is the second to take place at Magilligan this year.
In March, prison authorities revealed that a 44-year-old man died at the jail.
There have been 10 deaths in custody in the prison over the last ten years, including the sudden death today,
There have been over 40 deaths in custody recorded in the North’s jails in the last ten years.
The majority of them – 33 – have been in the powderkeg Maghaberry prison.
Magilligan is a medium security prison and holds inmates serving short jail terms or those coming to the end of their sentence.
