SINN Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the stated commitment from the Taoiseach on the development of the A5 project.
The Foyle MLA was speaking after Sinn Féin MP Barry McElduff questioned the Taoiseach at Queen’s University, Belfast as part of Taoiseach’s first official visit to the north last Friday.
Raymond McCartney said: “West Tyrone MP Barry McEluff asked the Taoiseach directly to reaffirm his personal commitment and the Irish government’s political and financial commitments to ensuring that the A5 Transport Corridor is developed as soon as possible.
“The development of the A5 is absolutely critical for Derry, Donegal and Tyrone and it is vital to redressing the infrastructure deficit in the North West.
“The A5 dual carriageway will provide opportunities to the North West in terms of attracting inward investment and tourism, reducing travel times and transport costs to make this region more economically competitive.
“It will also prove vital in improving road safety along the entire route given the many lives that have been sadly lost because of the inadequacy of the single carriageway.
“Sinn Féin have written to the Taoiseach to set up a meeting so we can discuss the detail of the £75 million commitment he made on Friday.”
