MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, has praised the organisers of the many successful community festival events which have taken place in the city in recent days.
Councillor McHugh said he was overwhelmed by the welcome he had received in community areas this week, where he was guest of honour at a whole host of family fun days.
“I was delighted at the number of invitations to attend events this week, and at the warm welcome I’ve received from people in so many different areas, including Shantallow, Glenabbey, Creggan, Glenview and Leafair,” he declared.
“I’ve been so impressed by the efforts being made by volunteers and community groups across the city to deliver a range of positive family friendly events to engage young people and provide alternative activities for them to enjoy over the summer months.
“I want to congratulate all the good work that is ongoing in these areas, clearly there has been significant progress in providing alternatives to bonfires and promoting positive community relations.
“It was a great opportunity to meet local people of all ages who supported these events, and to find out more about some of the fantastic programmes and organisations at work throughout the city.”
