THE following is a a statement from a multi-agency grouping over flooding across Derry last night.
“A multi-agency response including the PSNI, NI Fire and Rescue Service, DfI Rivers and Roads, Northern Ireland Water and Local Government is underway to mitigate the impact of yesterday’s exceptional rainfall event across the North West and West of Northern Ireland.
“Unfortunately the scale of the event meant that despite these best efforts this combined response was not sufficient to prevent significant flooding to homes and businesses seen over the past 24 hours.
“One of the difficulties with flooding of the scale is that it affects key infrastructure and the response was significantly hampered as a number of key routs such as Eglinton Road, Greysteel Road and Skeoge Road roundabout were impassable and limited or prevented response in some instances.
“Rainfall amounts of 60mm or more were recorded, which when compared to the Northern Ireland average rainfall amounts in August of less than 100mm, highlights the challenge that the multi-agency response faced.
“The response of all the relevant agencies is ongoing as we continue to work together to try to reduce the impact of this severe disruption.
