THERE have been 560 requests for financial help to Derry and Strabane District Council following the recent flooding in the area.
Heavy rainfall last Tuesday caused millions of pounds worth of damage and was compounded by further heavy downpours on Friday.
Already over a quarter of a million pounds has been paid out under the council’s Emergency Payment Scheme.
A Red Cross volunteer has said the damage caused by flooding in Eglinton village has become a humanitarian crisis.
Over 100 homes there were wrecked.
Allistair McFarland said: “There’s an awful lot of people affected in Eglinton and it’s affecting people in different ways.
“The shock of what’s actually happened is giving way, the adrenaline is gone and the reality is setting in with people.”
There are many similar stories of hardship right across the North West
Derry and Strabane District Council has so far received over 560 request for assistance under the Emergency Payment Scheme.
The Council’s technical staff have managed to inspected 98% of the properties registered under the scheme to advance payments.
So far around £270,000 has been paid out to those affected.
Checks are also being carried out on the water supply into Derry following the thunder and heavy rainfall.
There are fears an an illegal landfill site may have flooded the River Faughan after the flooding.
