Sinn Fein councillor Paul Fleming

SINN Féin Councillor Paul Fleming has said more training and advice must to be given to farmers to help reduce the numbers of injuries and deaths on farms.

He was speaking after the Farm Safety Partnership published its new action plan which is aimed at reducing the numbers of injuries and deaths on farms.

Paul Fleming said: “I welcome the publication of the Farm Safety Partnership’s new action plan.

“This year six people have been killed on farms in the North and approximately 100 accidents resulting in medical treatment take place each month.

“It is clear that agriculture and indeed farming remains one of the most hazardous work industries.

“Farmers need guidance and training on how to use machine and handling animals in a safe manner as well as first aid and response training in order to deal with incidents on farms to allow time for the emergency services to get there.”
