POLICE in Derry are advising students to stay safe as freshers week starts in the city.
A PSNI Foyle spokesperson said “This is the week when it happens; when young adults say goodbye to the luxuries of home and take their first independent step into the big, bad world.
“This is the week when they say their tearful goodbyes to parents and say hello to ready made meals, long hours of study and hours of educational discussion and debate (I know, who am I kidding?)
“Yes it is the start of first year students moving into their new digs to get ready for their first week at university.
“We want to help you make this transition smoothly, putting your safety and respect for your new community and neighbours first.
“Over the coming days we will be bringing you handy tips and advice that will help you to stay safe during your university years.
“Follow our Facebook and Twitter sites, relevant to the area your university is in, to learn what you can do to protect yourself and your property, look out for friends and be respectful of your new community and neighbours,”
And most importanT of all #StaySafe.
