SINN Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell has said there needs to be a zero tolerance approach to the use and sale of illegal firework.
And he has called for a wider information programme warning of the dangers of fireworks and the negative impact they have in local communities.
He was speaking after visiting three local secondary schools with a representative of Community Restorative Justice (CRJ) to delivery posters and leaflets highlighting the extreme dangers illegal fireworks have the potential to cause.
Councillor Campbell said: “Since the stories have been in the local press about the use of illegal fireworks and bangers, I have been inundated with complaints from right across the city.
“I felt it was important to get the message out about the dangers of using of fireworks.
“Myself and Sean Collins from Community Restorative Justice (CRJ) visited a number of schools in recent days and left in posters and leaflets highlighting the extreme dangers of using fireworks.
“We hope this initiative is at least a start of getting that message out to our young people.
“It’s also important that we let it be known there needs to be a zero tolerance to the sale of illegal fireworks and to pass information to the police or community representatives on anyone who is selling this stuff which is causing havoc,” added Cllr Campbell.
