THE Peace Bridge in Derry has been closed as a precautionary measure as the storm moves north.

At 3pm workers from the Department for Infrastructure sealed off the footbridge with tape and sandbags.

Derry and Strabane Council also announced that from the same time, all council facilities would cease to operate for the day including leisure centres, parks and open spaces in the area.

Many businesses in the city centre were closed throughout the day and all schools and colleges have been closed today.

The Education Authority says all schools with remain closed on Tuesday.

The advice from the police is to stay in doors and only drive if it is absolutely necessary.

PSNI Foyle say on its Facebook page: “Folks please drive carefully – wind is beginning to rise and roads are wet. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

“Winds are starting to pick so be careful if you are on the roads.”
