DETECTIVES are investigating an arson attack in Strabane which has destroyed at least one flat used for social housing.
The ground-floor flat at Lisnafin Park was empty when it was set alight in the early hours of Sunday, but police say a number of other nearby properties had to be evacuated.
The fire was reported at about 5.15am.
West Tyrone SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan said that, while he was thankful no one was hurt, the attack could “only be described as a reckless act of complete idiocy”.
Mr McCrossan added: “It is an absolute travesty that social housing in the area has literally gone up in flames.
“The flats involved have recently undergone renovation by the Housing Executive to try and improve the living conditions of tenants or future tenants.
“But all this progress has now been destroyed and I’d imagine it will take considerable time before these flats are occupied again.”
Detectives say enquiries into the arson attack are ongoing.
They are asking anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area, or who has any information about the incident, to contact them at Strand Road on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
